The Reverend Canon Peter Leonard

The Reverend Canon Peter Leonard

Peter grew up in various places in the South East of England where his parents ran pubs. He began a career in Marketing and Public Relations before responding to God’s call to ordination in the Church of England. He trained at Trinity College, Bristol from 1994 and was ordained in 1997. He served in two parishes in the Guildford Diocese between 1997 and 2007, one a traditional wealthy middle class suburban parish and the other a partnership with the Methodist Church in an area of relative social deprivation. He then responded to a call from God to be a teacher and so left the church to train as a primary school teacher. Peter taught in two schools becoming Head of School in a primary school north of Portsmouth.

In 2014 he was appointed Canon Chancellor of Portsmouth Cathedral where he is responsible for the Education and Community Engagement programme at the Cathedral. He has been a member of the General Synod of the Church of England since 2015, is a Chair of Governors for two local primary schools in Portsmouth and has been a trustee of OneBodyOneFaith since 2017.

Peter recently contributed a chapter to Brandan Robertson’s book “ Our Witness – Unheard Stories of LGBTQ Christians” in which Peter shares his journey to accept both his calling to ordination and his sexuality. Peter lives with his partner Mark and two grown up children in Portsmouth on the South Coast of the England where he enjoys baking, going to the gym, kayaking and time away in his VW campervan. He also thinks that he should be the next person to play Doctor Who in his favourite TV series! Peter was made Chair of the Board of Trustees of OneBodyOneFaith in 2018.
